Sermons

Proper 9 Sermon Year A 2014
“You Like Potato And I Like Potahto”
Sunday, July 6, 2014
The Rev. Peter Faass, Rector
Christ Church, Shaker Heights
Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30

Have you ever felt that regardless of what you do or say, you just cannot please some people? That despite your best efforts, someone will find fault with what you have done or with what you have said? The official term for this is contrarianism, which is the desire to be contrary for no other reason than being contrary.
Now mind you this is not just having a differing opinion or viewpoint. This is always taking an opposing view, regardless of what it may.
To slightly paraphrase Ella Fitzgerald’s famous song lyrics:
“You like potato and I like potahto
Then I like potato and you say potahto
Potato, potahto,
Potahto, potato
Let's call the whole thing off."

Pentecost Season!

Sundays

8:00 and 10:30 am – Liturgies

Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means “fiftieth day” and is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday. The Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church and is identified by the Bok of Common Prayer as one of the feasts that is “especially appropriate” for baptism.

Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost Sunday. Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost. The Season after Pentecost begins with an observance of Trinity Sunday when we remember and honor the Triune God revealed to us in and through the life of the Resurrected Christ. On this Sunday, white is the color of the day. From this Sunday on, the color will be green as we move into ordinary time and hear the lessons of Jesus’ teachings and learn how to live the Christian life. The color for the season after Pentecost is green to symbolize the growth and life of the church. It is the longest season of the church year, from Trinity Sunday until the first Sunday of Advent.
